Whether you’re drawn to Islandia’s natural beauty, recent developments, or tight-knit community, this village is a remarkable place to call home.

A Modern Village with a Unique History

Islandia’s history is notably recent, as it became the first village on Long Island to incorporate in over 15 years when it was established in April 1985. The push for incorporation began in 1980, sparked by CA Technologies’ establishment of its world headquarters in what was then informally called South Hauppauge. Residents, led by founding father Warren Raymond, sought to create a distinct community identity, presenting a petition with 432 signatures and a $1,000 filing fee to Islip officials. Despite initial resistance from the Town of Islip, including a lawsuit to block incorporation, the community prevailed, and Islandia officially became a village after residents agreed to ensure inclusive housing policies.

The village’s core is a 500-home development built by Levitt & Sons around 1963, offering seven model homes. Originally assigned to the Central Islip Union Free School District, despite expectations of joining the Hauppauge School District, the development retained the Central Islip ZIP code (11722) until incorporation. Islandia’s growth continued with significant developments, such as the opening of Jake’s 58 Hotel & Casino in 2017 at the former Long Island Marriott, which stirred debate but marked the first casino in Suffolk County. In January 2024, the former CA Technologies headquarters was demolished to make way for up to eight industrial and light-manufacturing buildings, signaling ongoing economic evolution.

A Diverse and Growing Community

Spanning 2.2 square miles of land, Islandia has a population density of 1,369.6 inhabitants per square mile, as reported in the 2000 census. The village is home to 1,007 households and 753 families, with 35.3% of households having children under 18 and 59.8% consisting of married couples. The racial makeup is notably diverse, with 73.63% White, 12.30% African American, 0.13% Native American, 6.05% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.94% from other races, and 2.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents comprise 19.10% of the population, and Islandia holds the distinction of having the highest percentage of Turkish residents in the U.S. at 2.5%.

The population is spread across age groups, with 24.7% under 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 36.3% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.0% aged 65 or older, with a median age of 36 years. Economically, Islandia is stable, with a median household income of $69,519 and a median family income of $69,615 in 2000. The per capita income was $25,682, with 5.5% of the population below the poverty line, including 7.1% of those under 18.

A Hub of Connectivity and Recreation

Islandia’s strategic location near the Long Island Expressway (I-495), which runs through its northern half, positions it at the geographic center of Long Island, offering excellent connectivity for commuters. The village lacks a central business district but is home to Lakeland Park, which includes Honeysuckle Pond and portions of the Connetquot River, providing opportunities for outdoor recreation. Though Honeysuckle Pond faced environmental challenges in 2016–2017, reducing it to a muddy puddle, the park remains a cherished community asset.

Educationally, Islandia is primarily served by the Central Islip Union Free School District, with smaller portions in the Connetquot Central and Hauppauge Union Free School Districts, ensuring quality education options for residents. The village’s governance, led by Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Deputy Mayor Thomas Annicaro, and Trustees Raymond Bush, Patricia Peters, and Victor Montanez, fosters a community-focused environment through biennial elections.
