Tucked within the scenic landscapes of Westchester County, Katonah is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Bedford, New York. Though small in population—home to just over 1,600 residents as of the 2020 census—Katonah’s history, culture, and character give it a unique and prominent place in the Hudson Valley region.
Named for Chief Katonah, a Native American sachem who played a pivotal role in the area's early land transactions, Katonah is steeped in history. During the American Revolutionary War, most residents supported the Continental Army, with many joining either the local militia or New York's 4th Regiment. Although Bedford was technically part of the "Neutral Ground"—an area not claimed by either British or Patriot forces—it still suffered from lawlessness and raids. However, Katonah's proximity to the Croton River and Continental Army outposts offered some level of protection.
Originally called Whitlockville, Katonah underwent a dramatic transformation in the late 19th century when it was forced to relocate due to the construction of the New Croton Dam. As the waters rose to create the expanded Muscoot Reservoir, more than 50 buildings were moved—literally rolled on logs by horses—to what became known as “New Katonah” in 1897. This extraordinary effort preserved the village's heritage and architecture while giving birth to the thriving community we see today.
This was not a unique event in the region. Katonah was just one of many towns altered or erased during the creation of the Croton Watershed, which remains essential to New York City’s drinking water supply.
Though small in area and population, Katonah’s influence extends well beyond its borders. The ZIP code 10536 encompasses over 10,000 people across the towns of Bedford, Lewisboro, and Somers. Within the hamlet proper, households are predominantly family-oriented, with 59.4% of homes consisting of married couples and nearly 47% with children under 18. Katonah’s population is primarily White, though the community also includes residents of Hispanic, African American, Asian, and multiracial backgrounds.
The average household income stands well above the national average, reflecting the hamlet’s prosperity and affluence. Yet despite this, Katonah retains a small-town warmth and strong sense of community.
Katonah has long attracted notable residents and creative minds, including Bruce Willis, Ralph Lauren, and Stanley Tucci. The hamlet is home to two National Historic Landmarks:
The John Jay Homestead: Former residence of America’s first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Stepping Stones: The historic home of Bill and Lois Wilson, co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon Family Groups.
The area is also known for its vibrant arts and culture scene. The Katonah Museum of Art offers rotating exhibitions covering diverse artistic disciplines and periods. Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, located just two miles east of the hamlet, hosts the Caramoor International Music Festival, where the Orchestra of St. Luke’s regularly performs.
Literary enthusiasts will appreciate the Katonah Poetry Series, once led by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, held at the Katonah Village Library—a hub of learning, art, and history.
Katonah is part of the Katonah-Lewisboro School District, widely recognized for academic excellence. Students attend Katonah Elementary School, John Jay Middle School, and John Jay High School. The area also offers private school options, including The Harvey School, a college-preparatory day and boarding school with a long-standing reputation.
Katonah is family-friendly in more than just academics. The area includes Muscoot Farm, a working historical farm offering camps, hayrides, and educational programs. The Katonah Art Center provides art and photography classes, summer camps, and community workshops.
Katonah is protected by the Katonah Volunteer Fire Department and receives emergency medical care from the Katonah-Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The Bedford Police Department handles law enforcement for the entire town, including Katonah, Bedford Village, and Bedford Hills.
Community spirit is strong, with annual events like the Katonah carnival, parade, and “chili night”, organized by local volunteers. These gatherings foster a close-knit atmosphere and make Katonah a place where neighbors truly look out for one another.
