Welcome to Pound Ridge – A Historic and Picturesque Westchester Community

Nestled in the southeastern corner of Westchester County, Pound Ridge, NY, offers a rare blend of natural beauty, small-town charm, and deep historical roots. With a 2020 census population of 5,082, the town spans 23.1 square miles and shares borders with Lewisboro, Bedford, and North Castle, as well as the Connecticut towns of Stamford and New Canaan. It is one of the most tranquil and scenic locations in the region, characterized by rolling hills, forests, reservoirs, and a rich cultural heritage.

Pound Ridge is known not only for its tight-knit community and rural charm but also for its deeply rooted history and involvement in key events of the nation’s past. From Native American settlements to battlegrounds of the American Revolution, Pound Ridge’s landscape tells the story of centuries of development and resilience.

Deep Historical Significance

The area now known as Pound Ridge was once inhabited by Native American tribes speaking the Munsee language, including the Wappinger Confederacy and its sub-groups such as the Tankiteke and Siwanoy. A dark chapter in local history is the Pound Ridge Massacre of 1644, when Dutch colonial forces attacked a Wappinger village, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives. Despite this tragic event, the area remained a significant site of Native American history.

European settlers began establishing permanent residences in 1718, mostly migrating from Stamford, Connecticut, and settled in areas like Long Ridge Road. The name "Old Pound Ridge" appears in historic documents as early as 1737, likely referring to a native game pound on a hill.

During the American Revolutionary War, the town played a significant role as a strategic location. In 1779, a British force led by Banastre Tarleton attacked American troops stationed in Pound Ridge in a surprise raid. Despite warnings from the patriot spy Luther Kinnicutt, the battle resulted in the burning of homes, a church, and the capture of American soldiers and supplies. Pound Ridge remained a contested area throughout the war, with both Loyalist and Patriot activity causing tensions among the population.

Economic and Cultural Evolution

Following its official incorporation in 1788, Pound Ridge developed as a largely agricultural community, eventually gaining prominence for shoemaking and basketmaking. The Scotts Corners area became known as "Basket Town" due to its specialization in crafting baskets, especially for the thriving oyster industry along Long Island Sound.

The 19th century saw significant transitions as small-scale farming and craftsmanship gave way to industrialization elsewhere. Pound Ridge’s population dipped by the early 20th century, reaching a low of 515 in 1920, but the town remained known for its natural landscape and quiet atmosphere.

In 1925, Westchester County established the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, a sprawling nature preserve that today offers thousands of acres for hiking, bird-watching, picnicking, and educational programs. The site was also home to a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp during the Great Depression, where young men helped build much of the park’s infrastructure still in use today.

A Community of Character and Beauty

Modern-day Pound Ridge has evolved into a sought-after residential haven for those looking to escape the congestion of nearby urban centers. Despite its peaceful setting, it remains connected to the broader economy of Westchester and nearby Fairfield County, CT.

The town’s commitment to preserving open space and historical integrity makes it one of the most unique communities in the area. While Pound Ridge lacks the commercial density of neighboring towns, residents value its sense of seclusion, strong civic engagement, and environmental stewardship. Scotts Corners, the town’s commercial district, offers boutique shopping, restaurants, and services that reflect the community’s character.
