The Dutch Village housing development, built in 1938, was the first major FHA project of its kind in upstate New York. The community’s pride is also symbolized by its official motto, "Urban-Suburban Village," and a village seal created by local students during the 50th anniversary celebration in 1974.

Pleasure Island and Al-Tro Island Park were iconic spots, attracting visitors with bicycle races, fireworks, and boardwalk amusements that rivaled those of Coney Island. Baseball also thrived in Menands—Chadwick Park and later Hawkins Stadium drew large crowds for games featuring the Albany Senators. Babe Ruth famously hit two home runs there in 1931.
As the 20th century progressed, Menands became a thriving retail destination. Landmarks such as Two Guys Department Store, Woolworth, and Montgomery Wards served thousands of local and regional shoppers. While many of these businesses have closed or transformed, the buildings and infrastructure they left behind still serve new purposes—like state offices, commercial warehouses, and modern retail spaces.
