Welcome to Irvington, NY – A Historic Village with Modern Appeal

Nestled on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, Irvington, also known as Irvington-on-Hudson, is a picturesque suburban village located within the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County. Just 20 miles north of Manhattan, this charming village combines small-town tranquility with direct access to New York City via the Metro-North Hudson Line. Its scenic beauty, deep-rooted history, and strong sense of community make Irvington one of the most sought-after places to live in the region.

Named in honor of famed American author Washington Irving, the village boasts a rich historical background and a vibrant cultural identity. Irvington’s Main Street, with its preserved 19th-century architecture, is a designated historic district and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. In fact, Westchester Magazine once named Irvington the “Best Place to Live in Westchester.”

A Rich and Storied History

Long before European settlers arrived, Irvington was home to the Wickquasgeck, a subgroup of the Wappinger people, who were closely related to the Lenape tribes. European colonization began in the 1600s when Dutch settlers laid claim to the land as part of the Van der Donck grant. In time, tenant farming gave way to artisan communities, and by the 18th century, Irvington’s location along the Albany Post Road made it a key stopover point for travelers.

Irvington played a quiet but symbolic role during the Revolutionary War. While no major battles were fought within the village, it was part of the “Neutral Ground” between British-held New York City and American-controlled territory to the north. Skirmishes, raids, and trading with both sides were common, leaving the region deeply affected by the war.

The arrival of the Hudson River Railroad in 1849 marked a new chapter in Irvington’s development. The community attracted affluent New Yorkers seeking respite from the city. Estates and mansions soon dotted the landscape, solidifying Irvington’s reputation as a peaceful retreat with easy access to Manhattan. The village officially adopted the name “Irvington” in 1854, with the support of local leaders and the blessing of its namesake, who lived at the nearby Sunnyside estate.

Modern Irvington – A Thriving Commuter Community

Today, Irvington remains a desirable commuter town, with a population of approximately 6,652 residents as of the 2020 census. The village balances historic charm with modern amenities, from boutique shopping and dining on Main Street to recreational access along the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway and the Hudson River waterfront. Irvington also includes the community of Ardsley-on-Hudson, a distinctive neighborhood with its own Metro-North station and rich cultural footprint.

Transportation options are abundant, with the Metro-North providing a quick and scenic commute to New York City. Broadway (Route 9) remains the village’s main artery, and access to the Saw Mill River Parkway and New York State Thruway ensures easy travel throughout Westchester County and beyond.
