Welcome to Hartsdale, NY — A Hamlet Steeped in History and Community Spirit

Nestled in the Town of Greenburgh, Hartsdale is a charming hamlet and census-designated place in Westchester County, New York. Located just 20 miles north of New York City, this vibrant suburban community offers residents a rare blend of historical richness, commuter-friendly convenience, and a welcoming, small-town atmosphere.

Hartsdale had a population of 5,293 according to the 2010 Census, though historical records suggest fluctuations over the years. With scenic parks, rich history, and close proximity to Manhattan via the Metro-North Harlem Line, it has become a desirable location for families, retirees, and professionals alike.

Deep Historical Roots

Hartsdale's history stretches back centuries, beginning with the Wecquaesgeek people, a subgroup of the Wappinger Native American tribe. European colonization began in the 17th century, when Dutch merchant Frederick Philipse was granted large tracts of land, which later became part of Philipse Manor.

The hamlet played a notable role during the American Revolution. In October 1776, the area around the present-day Hartsdale train station saw combat during a significant skirmish along the Bronx River. The historic Odell House, built in 1732, became a temporary headquarters for the French General Rochambeau, marking Hartsdale as an important site in the struggle for American independence.

By the 19th century, Hartsdale remained a largely agrarian landscape. That began to change when Eleazar Hart deeded land to expand the New York and Harlem Railroad in 1865, setting the foundation for Hartsdale’s transformation into a bustling commuter village. Over the next several decades, the area was rapidly developed into residential neighborhoods, making it the tight-knit suburban enclave it is today.

Unique Claims to Fame

Hartsdale holds several distinctive honors. It is home to America’s first canine cemetery, established by veterinarian Samuel Johnson in 1896. The Hartsdale Pet Cemetery continues to operate today and is a point of historical and cultural interest.

In 1934, the town also became the birthplace of the world’s first Carvel Ice Cream store, which opened right along Central Avenue. Though it closed in 2008, its legacy remains a proud part of Hartsdale’s identity.

Other historical landmarks include the Hartsdale Train Station, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, and the Evangeline Booth House, another local historic treasure.

Community and Lifestyle

Hartsdale may be small in size—covering 0.9 square miles—but it is rich in character. The community offers a peaceful suburban lifestyle while still being closely connected to New York City. Residents enjoy easy access to green spaces such as Secor Woods Park (25 acres), Ridge Road Park (170 acres), and Rumbrook Park (86 acres), which provide opportunities for outdoor activities and family recreation.

The hamlet is also home to Ferncliff Cemetery, the final resting place of many notable individuals. Its quiet streets, mature trees, and strong civic pride make Hartsdale a serene place to live and raise a family.

Demographics and Economy

As of the 2000 Census, Hartsdale had a population of 9,830, with a well-educated and diverse population. The community reflects a mix of racial and ethnic backgrounds, with White (76%), Asian (10%), African American (8.7%), and Hispanic or Latino (9.5%) populations among its residents.

Household and family life is a cornerstone of Hartsdale. Over 53% of households were married couples, and 24.3% had children under 18. The median household income was a robust $81,824, with the median family income exceeding $100,000. These numbers highlight Hartsdale's status as an affluent, family-oriented community with a high quality of life.
