A Historic Village on the Hudson River

Located in the town of Greenburgh, the village of Dobbs Ferry is a picturesque community nestled along the Hudson River in Westchester County, New York. As of 2021, Dobbs Ferry had an estimated population of 11,456, up from 10,875 in the 2010 census, reflecting its ongoing appeal as a residential haven with rich history, a vibrant community, and easy access to New York City.

With its ZIP code 10522, Dobbs Ferry is served primarily by the Dobbs Ferry Union Free School District, and is known for its excellent public services, attractive neighborhoods, and dedication to environmental sustainability. In fact, Dobbs Ferry was the first village in New York State to earn Climate Smart Community certification and has been nationally recognized as one of the Top 10 Best Places to Live in New York.

A Deeply Rooted History

Dobbs Ferry’s story begins long before European settlers arrived. The area was originally inhabited by the Wecquaesgeek tribe, part of the Wappinger Confederacy, who lived in the region for thousands of years. Traces of their presence, including oyster middens and other artifacts, continue to be discovered along Wickers Creek.

The village’s name derives from the Dobbs family, who in the early 1700s established a ferry service across the Hudson River. The ferry was a vital crossing point at a location where the steep cliffs of the Palisades gave way to a more navigable route. While there are differing accounts about who in the Dobbs family first operated the ferry, what is known is that the service played an essential role in the region’s early development and remained in operation for over two centuries.

Dobbs Ferry also played a pivotal role in the American Revolution. In July 1781, General George Washington and French General Comte de Rochambeau stationed their troops in the village as they prepared for the decisive campaign against the British in Yorktown, Virginia. On August 19, 1781, the troops began their march south from Dobbs Ferry, a moment that ultimately led to the end of the war and American independence.

From Ferry Town to Thriving Suburb

Dobbs Ferry was incorporated as a village in 1873 under the name Greenburgh, but the name was changed to Dobbs Ferry in 1882 to reflect its unique historical identity. Over the decades, the village has evolved from a river crossing and strategic military post into a residential and cultural hub.

Notable historic landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places include the Estherwood and Carriage House, the Hyatt-Livingston House, South Presbyterian Church, and the Dobbs Ferry U.S. Post Office.

Today, Dobbs Ferry is characterized by a blend of historic architecture, natural beauty, and modern amenities. Its neighborhoods—such as Riverview Manor, Wickers Creek, Juhring, and Springhurst Park—are known for their character and charm. The Juhring Nature Preserve and the Saw Mill River provide scenic retreats for nature lovers, while the Waterfront Park offers sweeping views of the Hudson River.

Demographics and Community Life

Dobbs Ferry offers a high quality of life, reflected in its diverse population and strong local economy. The median household income was $70,333, with a median family income of $93,127.
