Nyack (/ˈnaɪ.æk/) is a picturesque village nestled along the west bank of the Hudson River, about 15 miles north of the Manhattan boundary. Situated primarily in the Town of Orangetown in Rockland County, a portion of the village also extends into Clarkstown. With a population of 7,265 as of the 2020 census, Nyack is known for its small-town charm, artistic flair, and deep historical roots that continue to shape its community identity.
Part of a group of hamlets known collectively as “The Nyacks”—which also includes South Nyack, Central Nyack, Upper Nyack, and West Nyack—the village of Nyack sits on just 1.6 square miles of land, over half of which is water. The village’s location along the Hudson River, combined with its proximity to Interstate 87 and the Tappan Zee Bridge (Mario M. Cuomo Bridge), makes it a vital commuter hub for those working in Westchester County and New York City, as well as a highly desirable place to live.
Nyack’s story begins long before European settlement, with the Tappan Indians, who called the area “Nay-ack,” meaning “fishing place” in the Algonkian dialect. The area’s natural resources—particularly its access to the river—made it an ideal site for Native American fishing and settlement.
In 1675, Harman Douwenszen, a Dutch settler, became the first European to establish residence in what would become Nyack. His farm, New Orania, laid the foundation for what was later named Orangetown in 1683. As the village grew, the name "Nyack" gained popularity and the area was officially incorporated as a village in 1872.
Nyack was once a thriving hub of industry, known for sandstone quarrying, shipbuilding, and shoe manufacturing. The completion of the Northern Branch railroad in the mid-1800s spurred population growth, and the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge in 1955 further accelerated development. By the 1980s, the village underwent a significant revitalization, resulting in a vibrant downtown district filled with shops, restaurants, galleries, and the Helen Hayes Theatre.
Nyack is more than just a scenic riverside village—it’s a place with a powerful sense of community, resilience, and culture. From its minor league baseball team, the Nyack Rocklands, in the 1940s, to its 21st-century arts scene, Nyack has always fostered creativity and public engagement.
One unique historical event that gave Nyack national attention was the 1991 court case Stambovsky v. Ackley, in which a home on LaVeta Place was legally declared haunted. The case made headlines across the country and is still taught in law schools today.
Another moment of significance was Frederick Douglass’s visits to Nyack in the 19th century. In 1865 and again in 1872, Douglass delivered impassioned lectures in the village advocating for black suffrage and equality, further cementing Nyack’s place in the history of social justice.
