Nestled within the Town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, Ardsley is a charming village with a population of 5,079 according to the 2020 U.S. Census. With a total area of just 1.3 square miles, Ardsley may be small in size, but it is rich in character, community spirit, and historical significance. Governed by Mayor Nancy Kaboolian, Ardsley combines the tranquility of suburban living with close proximity to New York City, making it a popular home for families and professionals alike.
Ardsley’s history dates back centuries to the time of the Wickquasgeck tribe, a subgroup of the Wappinger Native Americans who originally inhabited the area. The land later became part of the Philipse Manor estate under Dutch control and was eventually confiscated by the state after the American Revolution.
In the 19th century, the area — once known as Ashford — grew around key industries such as blacksmithing, milling, and even pickle production. A significant population boom occurred in the 1880s following the construction of the Putnam Railroad and New Croton Aqueduct. The town’s name was changed to “Ardsley” to secure a unique post office, thanks in part to Cyrus West Field, who named his estate after his ancestor’s English birthplace of East Ardsley.
Incorporated as a village in 1896, Ardsley continued to evolve with the addition of its own school system, fire department, and downtown district. However, a devastating fire in 1914 and later construction of the New York State Thruway in the 1950s reshaped much of the village, leading to the loss of its train station and parts of its commercial hub.
Ardsley is defined by two key waterways — the Saw Mill River and Sprain Brook — which run through the village. These rivers, while picturesque, have historically posed flooding risks. Significant floods in 1980, 1984, and 1999 caused considerable damage, prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to implement several flood control projects to protect homes, businesses, and infrastructure in the area.
The village experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. On average, Ardsley receives around 28 inches of snow annually, adding to the region’s four-season charm.
Over the years, Ardsley has seen steady population growth, with notable demographic changes. According to the U.S. Census:
Median household income: $105,293
Median family income: $126,239
Per capita income: $47,086
Poverty rate: 1.3%
The population is diverse and educated, with 68.3% identifying as non-Hispanic White, 15.5% Asian, 3.4% African American, and 8.2% Hispanic or Latino. Families are at the heart of the community, with 75.1% of households being married couples and 43.5% having children under 18. The village also boasts a high percentage of homeowners and a strong sense of neighborhood connection.
Ardsley is served by the Ardsley Union Free School District, which encompasses the entire village as well as parts of Dobbs Ferry and unincorporated Greenburgh. The district has a reputation for academic excellence and community involvement, with modern school facilities and programs that foster student success.
The Ardsley Public Library, part of the Westchester Library System, is a central hub for learning and enrichment, offering a wide range of resources, programs, and events for residents of all ages.
Despite its suburban setting, Ardsley is conveniently located with access to key roadways and public transportation. However, the construction of the New York State Thruway in the 1950s, while improving regional connectivity, also significantly altered Ardsley’s downtown landscape and resulted in the closure of its train station on the Putnam Division.
Today, Ardsley maintains a peaceful residential atmosphere, supported by parks, recreational areas, and community programs. Its compact geography makes it a walkable village with quiet streets and green spaces ideal for families, seniors, and young professionals.
