Archville, New York, may be a small hamlet tucked into the Town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester County, but its rich history, unique character, and close-knit community make it a vital part of the Hudson Valley. Just a short drive from our office in Tarrytown, Sullivan Brill Personal Injury Attorneys is honored to serve the residents of Archville with trusted legal advocacy. Whether you’re a longtime resident or new to the area, we’re here to stand by your side when you need a personal injury attorney you can rely on.
Archville’s story begins in the 19th century and is closely tied to the development of the Old Croton Aqueduct—one of New York City’s earliest water supply systems. In 1839, an arched bridge was constructed to carry the aqueduct over what is now U.S. Route 9. This iconic bridge gave the community its original name, Arch Hill. The structure was not only a feat of engineering but also a symbol of the hamlet's growing importance as a support hub for regional infrastructure projects.
As the community grew, many of the laborers involved in building the aqueduct settled in Archville, laying the foundation for what would become a resilient, working-class neighborhood. When Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in nearby Briarcliff Manor was founded in 1839, many of its early parishioners were residents of Archville.
Although the original arched bridge was removed in 1924 for safety reasons, the community’s identity remained firmly rooted in its historic origins. In 1998, the bridge was resurrected—not for water supply, but for pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians crossing a dangerous section of Route 9. This modern crossing, connecting Rockwood Hall and the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, honors the past while serving the needs of today’s visitors and locals.
Archville occupies a strategically scenic spot abutting U.S. Route 9. The hamlet’s primary streets—Union Street, Arch Hill, and Requa Street—are dotted with residences and a handful of businesses, all set against the backdrop of the Hudson River and nearby Pocantico Lake. Directly across Route 9 lies Rockwood Hall, a stunning expanse of parkland that once belonged to the Rockefeller family and is now part of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve.
This natural setting not only contributes to the area’s beauty but also provides recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Hikers, nature enthusiasts, and equestrians enjoy miles of well-maintained trails, preserved landscapes, and scenic overlooks.
No account of Archville would be complete without mentioning its proud volunteer fire service. The Archville Fire Department has long been a pillar of community safety and civic pride. First established in 1907, it was chartered two years later in 1909. From humble beginnings—including a 20-foot tower and a shed with just 30 galvanized buckets—the department grew rapidly thanks to community support and generous donations.
One such donor was financier and philanthropist Frank A. Vanderlip, whose contributions helped establish a permanent firehouse on Requa Street. Over the years, the department modernized its equipment, acquiring a hand-drawn, horse-operated 50-gallon pumper and later expanding to a fleet that now includes three chief’s cars and two modern fire engines.
Throughout the 20th century, the department’s history became entwined with that of neighboring Briarcliff Manor. In 1930, Archville’s department merged with the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department, forming the Scarborough Fire Company. However, disputes over training, jurisdiction, and costs led to a separation in 1972. That same year, Archville proudly reestablished its independent fire department—resuming full responsibility for protecting the hamlet and surrounding areas from the Hudson River to Pocantico Lake.
What sets Archville apart is its enduring sense of community. Despite its small size and limited commercial activity, the hamlet has maintained a deep sense of civic responsibility, independence, and pride. From the early laborers who helped build New York City’s aqueduct system to today’s first responders who keep the community safe, Archville is a place defined by dedication and resilience.
