Sullivan Brill Personal Injury Attorneys is proud to serve the residents of New Hartford and surrounding areas from our Utica, NY office, offering compassionate and experienced legal representation for those who have been injured due to negligence or wrongdoing.

A Rich History Rooted in Determination

New Hartford’s story begins in March 1788 with the arrival of Jedediah Sanger, a man of resilience who had lost everything to a fire in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. Determined to start anew, Sanger purchased land in what was then part of Whitestown and began building a new life. His settlement marked the beginning of a town that would grow rapidly due to its natural resources and strategic location.

According to popular local lore—still embraced by the New Hartford Historical Society—Sanger secured 1,000 acres of land from George Washington and George Clinton at just fifty cents an acre. He later sold a portion of it to fellow settler Joseph Higbee at double the price. While deed records suggest the story may have been slightly romanticized, it underscores the entrepreneurial spirit that shaped New Hartford from its earliest days.

Industrial Beginnings Along the Sauquoit Creek

New Hartford’s development owes much to the Sauquoit Creek, a vital waterway that powered early industry in the area. In 1789, Sanger erected a sawmill followed by a gristmill in 1790. These initial efforts soon led to a bustling manufacturing hub.

By the 19th century, the town boasted production facilities for carpets, nails, paper, cotton cloth, and knitted fabrics. In fact, New Hartford was home to the first ingrain loom and the first cut nails made in New York State. Water power from the creek allowed the town to outpace nearby Utica in manufacturing for a time, before the opening of the Erie Canal shifted regional trade routes.

Village Incorporation and Civic Evolution

The Town of New Hartford was officially formed on April 12, 1827, carved from the larger Town of Whitestown. Shortly after, in 1870, the Village of New Hartford was incorporated from 406 acres of the town, formalizing what had already become a vibrant center of commerce and community life.

Through subsequent legislative acts, including land transfers to and from neighboring towns like Kirkland and Westmoreland, New Hartford’s boundaries and administrative structure were refined. Today, the town encompasses over 16,000 acres and includes both the incorporated village and several smaller hamlets, such as Washington Mills.

A Suburb with a Strong Identity

While the Erie Canal eventually shifted commercial momentum to Utica, New Hartford remains a vital part of the region. The town thrives as a suburban enclave with a mix of residential neighborhoods, shopping districts, and business centers. Its schools, parks, and public services are highly regarded, making it an attractive place to live for families and professionals alike.

New Hartford is also known for its historic charm. Streets like Genesee Street retain the architectural character of earlier times, and institutions like the New Hartford Historical Society help preserve the town’s unique legacy.
