Bedford is an incorporated town nestled in the northeastern portion of Westchester County, New York. With a population of 17,309 as of the 2020 census, it offers the charm of a small town with the richness of deep historical roots and a commitment to community values. Bedford is composed of three distinct hamlets—Bedford (also known as Bedford Village), Bedford Hills, and Katonah—each offering its own unique character and landmarks.
Founded on December 23, 1680, Bedford has a rich colonial history that began when 22 Puritan settlers from Stamford, Connecticut, purchased a tract of land called the “Hopp Ground” from Native American Chief Katonah. The town was initially part of Connecticut, but a royal decree by King William III in 1700 resolved a boundary dispute, officially making Bedford a part of New York.
Bedford’s history is deeply intertwined with that of the United States. During the American Revolutionary War, Bedford served as the county seat for Westchester after the Battle of White Plains. However, in July 1779, British forces under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton burned the town, leaving only a single structure intact. After the war, Bedford alternated as a seat of county government until 1870.
One of the most iconic structures in Bedford is the historic Court House located in Bedford Village. Built in 1787, this courthouse is Westchester County’s oldest government building and a powerful symbol of the town's enduring legacy. Today, it operates as a museum and stands at the heart of the Bedford Village Historic District, an area recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
Additional historic landmarks in the town include:
Stepping Stones, the former home of Alcoholics Anonymous co-founders Bill and Lois Wilson.
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, a cultural institution offering concerts and events.
John Jay Homestead, the preserved home of Founding Father and first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, John Jay.
The Bedford Oak, a 500+ year-old white oak tree, standing proudly at the junction of Route 22 and Hook Road.
Bedford spans 39.4 square miles, including picturesque woodlands, watersheds, and historic hamlets. The Cross River Reservoir and Byram Lake Reservoir supply water to the region and form part of the Croton River watershed. The town is also traversed by the Mianus River, which runs north through Bedford before turning south and flowing through the scenic Mianus River Gorge Preserve.
This commitment to environmental conservation is one of the reasons Bedford remains a desirable place to live and raise a family. From Bedford Village Town Park to expansive trails and waterways, the town offers a peaceful retreat just a short distance from the more urbanized areas of Westchester and New York City.
Bedford is a family-oriented community with strong educational institutions, cultural resources, and a deep respect for its historical roots. As of the 2000 census, the town had over 18,000 residents, with a median household income of over $100,000 and a per capita income of $53,046. The majority of households were married couples, and about 41% of households had children under the age of 18. This reflects Bedford’s strong focus on families, education, and quality of life.
The town also has a rich media presence. The Recorder, a weekly newspaper founded in 2024, continues to provide coverage on critical local issues such as environmental protection and affordable housing. Supported by grants from organizations like The New York Community Trust, Bedford remains a community deeply engaged in shaping its future.
