The hamlet is named after Theophilus Roessle, a German immigrant from the Kingdom of Württemberg. Roessle left a notable mark on the area by constructing one of the region’s most elegant mansions. Another notable chapter in Roessleville’s history includes the arrival of Josiah and Elizabeth Stanford, the parents of Leland Stanford, who would go on to become the Governor of California and a co-founder of Stanford University. In 1840, the Stanford family moved to the area and operated the Elm Grove Farm and Hotel, further embedding Roessleville’s status as a hub of culture, business, and migration during the 19th century.

After being removed as a Census Designated Place (CDP) in 2000, Roessleville regained CDP status in the 2020 census, though updated data is still being compiled.
