Freeport is more than just a village; it’s a destination, a community, and a place with rich historical roots. Located in the town of Hempstead, in Nassau County, Freeport sits on the South Shore of Long Island, offering a scenic waterfront lifestyle just miles from Manhattan. With a population of over 44,000 (as of 2020), Freeport is the second-largest village in New York State, known for its diversity, nautical heritage, and vibrant neighborhoods.
From its early days as an oystering village to its growth into a popular resort town for New York City’s theater elite in the early 20th century, Freeport has long been a place where opportunity meets charm. Today, it remains a sought-after residential suburb, retaining some light industry, commercial activity along its canals, and a strong sense of local identity.
Freeport's origins trace back to the 1640s, when it was part of the territory of the Meroke Indians. The land eventually became home to settlers like Edward Raynor, who built the first cabin in what became known as Raynortown. The village officially adopted the name Freeport in 1853, a nod to its status as a “free port” where ship captains could dock without paying customs duties.
After the Civil War, Freeport developed into a commercial oystering hub, and though the oyster trade declined in the 20th century, Freeport still maintains one of the largest concentrations of commercial fishing near New York City. Development accelerated in the late 1800s with the arrival of the Southside Railroad, and canals like the Woodcleft Canal—now the site of the popular Nautical Mile—shaped the village’s nautical identity.
The early 1900s brought further growth, with trolley lines connecting Freeport to Brooklyn, Hempstead, and Point Lookout, while summer resorts and attractions drew visitors and vaudeville performers. Freeport even hosted its own theatrical society, LIGHTS (Long Island Good Hearted Thespian Society), offering entertainment and parades in the off-season. Notable residents and frequent visitors included Will Rogers, Sophie Tucker, and Buster Keaton.
Freeport’s community is as dynamic today as it was in the past. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Freeport is home to a diverse population, with 42.5% Hispanic or Latino, 30.9% African American, 23.6% White, and a growing Asian and multiracial demographic. Many residents are of Dominican, Salvadoran, Puerto Rican, and Guatemalan descent, contributing to the village’s vibrant cultural fabric.
Freeport also stands out as a family-oriented community. The average household size is 3.20, with over 36% of households having children under 18. Its population skews younger, with over a quarter under the age of 18 and a median age of 35.
Despite being a popular commuter town, Freeport retains its independence. It operates its own municipal electric utility, giving residents access to lower energy rates. It’s one of only two such systems in Nassau County. With east-west access via Sunrise Highway (NY-27) and proximity to the Meadowbrook State Parkway, Freeport is well-connected yet retains a close-knit, village atmosphere.
Freeport spans 4.6 square miles, with much of its southern section defined by a network of canals, giving residents direct boating access to the Atlantic Ocean through the Great South Bay. The Woodcleft Canal, one of the oldest, has been transformed into the Nautical Mile, a bustling waterfront stretch filled with seafood restaurants, shops, and marinas.
The village is also home to historic landmarks like the Freeport Village Municipal Hall and remnants of its vaudeville past, such as the site of the Sigmond Opera House and the stories behind the Freeport Spite House—built by John J. Randall in defiance of city planners.
